UM Football Earns Champs Bowl Bid

The No. 14 University of Miami will culminate its 2009 season in the Champ Sports Bowl against No. 24 Wisconsin on Dec. 29 at 8 p.m.

The game will be played in Orlando at the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium and be televised on ESPN.

“There is a lot of excitement,” said head coach Randy Shannon. “We felt if we couldn’t go to a BCS bowl game, the Champs [Sports Bowl] was the next best thing. I know the TV ratings are going to be high and there will probably be standing room only. We have an opportunity to get our fifth non-conference win.”

The Canes (9-3, 5-3) will look for their first 10 win season since 2003. The Badgers (9-3, 5-3) finished tied for fourth in the Big 10.

This is Miami’s first ever appearance in the Champ Sports Bowl. Miami is 2-1 all-time against the Badgers. The last time these two squads met was 20 years ago when UM crushed the Badgers in Madison, Wisconsin 51-3

U Sports Represent over Break: B-Ball and Football

While you were stuffing your faces with breasts and thighs this break, UM athletics continued to DO WORK in a big way.

For starters, the football team closed out it’s “storied” season (for lack of better a euphemism), beating intrastate rival USF by three touchdowns. Perhaps inspired by their debut Nike wardrobe, the Hurricanes defense and offense seemed to click wonderfully. Harris tallied two scores by air and James rumbled across the goal line for two TDs of his own. In a lot of ways, the game gave Miami the opportunity to go away making a statement. The win should also situate the team for favorable bowl placement in the post-season.

On the hardwood, Miami’s ballers threw down with style against USC Upstate. Despite USC’s height advantage in the form of 7’ 3” gargantuan center Nick Schneiders, UM still rained in the baskets. Collins scored 13 points and Johnson had 11. Defensively, the ‘Canes held the opposition to measly 41. The victory marks the seventh straight since Miami’s opening game, a streak which should bolster the confidence of a rebuilding team. Though we have yet to play anyone with a really big reputation, Miami is about to start facing some real talent. Let’s hope they can keep the momentum going!

All in all, a good weekend for the big two!

duke - post game thoughts

  • Randy Shannon: That was a good win for us today to end up in the season. It was the last time for the seniors to play at home, so it was a big win. It lets us finish right for the first time in a long time in the ACC. 5-3 is huge for us. It's a start. We are better than we were last year but we got to keep getting better. Each year we have to build and keep going and each week as a football team we have to build and keep going.I thought it was tremendous how we bounced back from the first half, and I thought our defense really kept us in the game when the offense was struggling. When we got down into their territory we had a bad snap, a fumble and an interception. When we got down in the red zone in the first half, we didn't execute the way we were supposed to. We came back in the second half and I thought we did some great things. Especially offensively, I thought we did some great things. It looked like we were doing a lot of running the ball but actually we finished with 44 passing attempts and 43 rushing. Third down was unbelievable, it shows you when we come out and know what we need to do to get it done, it helps. We dropped some balls today. I'm not going to say we didn't but you have to have confidence in everything we do. Jimmy Graham came across the middle and dropped a ball but we came back to him with four or five catches on third down which was huge. I think that's what tells you what kind of confidence that our players have in what we're doing on offense. With Jacory [Harris] we just have to keep coaching. I think coach Whip did a great job this week and he's going to continue to do a great job of coaching him to be where he needs to be. As an overall game, I thought it was phenomenal, it was great, there is no more you can ask for when you get a win like this.
  • Jacory Harris: Duke was cheering, signing songs like they had this game won. That right there lit a flame inside my soul. I was like `Man, I can't let this happen.' So I started to loosen up, have fun - the second half we came out, did what we had to do
