UM Fieldhouse - Green/Gold Standard

With basketball season already under way, one of the University of Miami’s biggest off-season additions has already received national recognition– the UM Field House.

Roughly about 30,000 square feet, the structure that sits next to the BankUnited Center was recently certified with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system at the gold level due to its use of environmentally-friendly materials and energy conservation methods.

LEED is a set of energy-efficient building standards established by the U.S. Green Building Council which recognizes buildings that utilize ‘green’ building techniques in an effort to continue raising awareness of the impact made by buildings on the environment.

So what’s putting the GREEN in green and orange? Check it out:

*High Efficiency A/C - aimed at reducing the energy cost based on Florida Energy Code

*High Reflective Roofing Materials - white roof has low heat absorption

*Moisture Senors - these sensors located within the surrounding landscape can assess water levels needed by plants and automatically turn on or off conserve accordingly.

*Preferred Parking - for energy efficient / low emitting vehicles.

*Energy Efficient Lighting - occupancy motion control lighting in all rooms

*Paints, Coatings, Adhesives - low-emitting gases content

*Water Efficient - high efficiency plumbing fixtures with hand sensors to reduce water use.

*Makes use of recycled, refurbished, salvaged or reused materials, and materials processed and manufactured regionally.

If anything, this marks a big step forward in Miami’s commitment to encouraging green initiatives on campus.
